He just took his first steps two days ago. Now he’s running around everywhere. He hasn’t quite gotten the concept of stopping yet. He just runs into things and bounces off.
We suspected Baby Gabe could walk a while ago, but he was just too comfortable crawling. His A-ma suggested we test him, and that’s how we found out he was punking us for a while now.
Baby Gabe is back to his playful self. Turns out he didn’t have herpes after all. It was another case of the coxsackie virus that caused his herpangina a few months ago. This case was much worse, though. Unfortunately, his doctor said kids in day care/school are the most vulnerable to this virus b/c it’s easily passed through saliva. Kids share stuff all the time. There really isn’t much parents or day care providers can do to prevent the spread of this virus short of keeping kids in separate bubbles. It’s just a consequence of growing up. We’re just glad he’s back to normal.
It’s no exaggeration to say Baby Gabe has been sick more days in 2010 than he’s been healthy. This last one was the worst he ever had. It came at the tail end of his latest cold. He contracted a really bad case of cold sores. They erupted all over his tongue, gums, and roof of his mouth. He had fevers as high as 103. He would not stop crying on Thursday and much of Friday. What was scary was he refused to nurse so he wasn’t getting food or liquids. The doctor took one look into his mouth and said, “His mouth is a mess.” Fortunately, we caught it early so she prescribed acyclovir for him. It seems to have helped a lot. He’s still got some sores, but he’s at least nursing and eating soft foods and is back to his playful self.
Baby Gabe attended his first wedding this past weekend. His Uncle Elvin and Auntie Lisa were married March 12 in Phoenix, AZ. Although he had a bad cold and was fighting a fever, Baby Gabe made the best of it. He looked dapper in his pinstriped suit. He waved and gave high-fives to entire tables at the reception. Unfortunately, the dancing got started past his bedtime. Otherwise, we’re sure he would have had a line of ladies waiting on him to ask them to dance.
Baby Gabe *finally* has started teething. It’s a bit blurry, but the picture on the left shows a thin white line emerging from his bottom gum. He’s handled it all very well. He’s back to getting up about twice a night for some comfort, but we feel he’ll get back to his usual sleep pattern soon.
His parents, on the other hand, have been knocked about by an unrelenting cough and massive congestion. Mom is finally on the mend after having been sick the past 12 days, but dad has a doctor’s appointment today to rule out pneumonia. Our friend, Rose, has two daughters, and she said, “You won’t believe the type of diseases you’ll have to deal with. Prepare to be sicker than you’ve ever been in your life.” Oy vey.
