Baby Gabe can really motor around now. He still crawls to most places, but he’s developed a habit now of walking sideways like a mountain climber on a ledge. He’ll walk sideways along the length of our couch, then grab onto his walker to get to the bedroom, then move sideways along the door, the console table, the dresser, etc. until he reached the other end of the room. It’s fun to watch. But for his parents, it’s just a relief to know he’s independent enough to not always need us within eyesight. We can do stuff in the kitchen or living room while he happily entertains himself in his room. If he needs anything, he can come to us.
Ever since we moved Baby Gabe into his own room two weeks ago, he’s been sleeping much better. He even slept through the night a few times. By “slept through the night,” we mean 8pm to 6am. (We never understood those books that defined “through the night” as any 5 hour chunk of time. Maybe they’re talking about babies on red-eye flights or up near the Arctic Circle in summer because we don’t know any other explanation how 5 hours is sleeping through the night.) Other nights, he would wake once or maybe twice, but we’ve never had to spend more than 5 minutes getting him back to sleep. So overall, moving him out was a good move.
Baby Gabe is getting into everything nowadays. We’ve got the electrical outlet plugs, and we’ve moved the house plants, trash cans, and anything fragile around and out of his reach. But it’s still fun to come into a room and see the random stuff lying around. It’s a sure sign he’s been there.
